Tokyo 2017: All-New Toyota Century Set To Debut, V8 Hybrid Only

While the Toyota Century may be the top-of-the-crop for the company, it is perhaps the slowest evolving model in its lineup as it has remained mostly unchanged since 1967. Toyota is set to introduce its third generation Century at the upcoming 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, with the highlight being the new hybrid V8 powerplant, dropping the nameplate's iconic V12.

First introduced in 1967, the original Toyota Century remained largely unchanged over its 30 year life, apart from minor engine and exterior updates. The second generation Century was introduced in 1997, bringing with it a new 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V12 into the mix. The second generation Toyota Century was then discontinued in early 2017.

For the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota will be heralding the third generation model. The main focus of the new model is its new 5.0-litre V8 hybrid powertrain, which the company says offers 'outstanding fuel efficiency'. Codenamed 2UR-FSE, the V8 that powers the new Century features D-4S direct injection and Toyota Hybrid System II (THS II) for improved fuel economy. Toyota has yet to release power output or fuel consumption figures.

From the exterior, Toyota has maintained its signature Century design whilst modernizing the rest of the model. Projector headlights with LED Adaptive High Beam System surround the Century's iconic large front grille. In fact, the profile of the new Century is largely identical to its predecessor, though Toyota has repositioned the side mirrors and replaced the door handles with grab-type units. 

Moving inside, the Toyota Crown sits four with utmost comfort, thanks to its 100% high quality wool that is flexible and soft. Optionally, customers can choose to have their Century upholstered in leather too. An LCD panel located in the centre arm rest allows the rear passengers to control the seats, air-conditioning and audio settings. Other amenities include a writing table, reading light, rear seat infotainment system with large display and a 20-speaker audio system. 

Toyota Safety Sense P with collision avoidance support, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert are available as well.
