PDRM To Use New Plate Scanners To Detect Traffic Offenders By August

The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will implement a new Automated Number Plate Recognition system come August, reports FMT.

Costing the government some RM30 million, Bukit Aman Traffic Police officer, Supt Zulkefly Yahya told reporters at the 2015 Foreign National Outstanding Summonses Operation in Johor Baru that at least 20 scanners will be bought for use at first, for use at nine entry points at national borders in its first phase.

He continued, “The scanners using US technology will be widely used in states bordering neighbouring countries, including tracking down foreign nationals with outstanding traffic summonses.”

The system will also allow PDRM to detect stolen vehicles that attempt border crossing.

With the new system implemented, Zulkefly also iterated that action can be taken immediately against any offenders.

An on-going operated that began last Friday at various entry locations in Johor Baru has since managed to detect 4,200 Singaporean motorists with outstanding summonses – the majority of them are believed to be for speeding.
