Paris 2016: BMW X2 Previewed In Concept Form

Foreshadowing the production model’s imminent arrival, BMW is teasing its upcoming X2 compact crossover coupe at the 2016 Paris Motor Show in concept form.

Finished in a striking shade of Luminous Red distinctly contrasted against dark-coloured claddings, the BMW Concept X2 seeks to portray a mix of sportiness and ruggedness in its pose.

“The BMW Concept X2 combines the fast-moving body language and low-slung proportions of a coupe with the robust construction of an X model. This is a sporty vehicle with a bold character, and it allows us to open up some fascinating new design possibilities for the BMW brand,” says Karim Habib, Head of BMW Design.

The concept’s design pays tribute to the brand’s long-standing history in making glorious coupes. Aficionados of the brand will, in particular, take note of the BMW roundel placed at the base of the C-pillar, a design cue that harks back its models from the 1970s.

Up front, the Concept X2 sports the latest interpretation of BMW’s trademark appearance of the double kidney grilles flanked two circular headlights on each side. In contrast with existing or previous BMW models, the kidney grilles of the Concept X2 are wider at the bottom than at the top, a design cue which the car’s designers claim to visually lower the car. The entire grille itself sits lower than the tail lights, further cultivating a lowered appearance.

BMW’s official communication materials make no mention of the X2’s mechanical make up, but it is widely-known to be based upon the current UKL-platform of the F48 X1, with a range of transverse-mounted engines mated to FWD and AWD drivetrains.

Reports have indicated that X2 is set for market launch in 2017, and we expect it to feature the same range of engines as found in the X1, namely the 1.5-litre 3-cylinder and 2.0-litre 4-cylinder B-series petrol and diesel engines in various states of tune.
