This means that the demerit point system will return, punishing drivers that break various traffic laws in Malaysia, including running the red lights and driving over the speed limit.

Every driver start with 0 points, each offence will result in demerit added to the record. Drivers who accumulate their first 20 points will receive a warning from JPJ. If the driver accumulates another 20 points, his or her driving license will be suspended for 6 to 8 months. In short, for every 20 points the driver accumulates, his or her license will be suspended for an additional 2 months. Once the driver has been suspended 3 times within a period of 5 years, his or her driving license will be terminated.

To redeem themselves, they can attend courses held by JPJ. Additionally, if these drivers does not rake in any points within a 1 year period, their demerit points will be deducted in half.

As mentioned earlier, demerit points are given to drivers who fail to stop at red lights (4 points) and exceeding the speed limit. If the driver exceeds a speed limit by up to 25 km/h, 2 points will be given. For speeds exceeding the speed limit by 25 km/h to 40 km/h, 3 points will be given. For speeds exceeding 40 km/h above the speed limit, 4 points will be "awarded".

With the demerit system in place, JPJ hopes to reduce the amount of road accidents and make travelling safer for everyone.
