Hyundai Ioniq 5 Is Coming In February 2021 - Here Are The Teasers

Despite 2020 being a slow year, Hyundai managed to make some pretty large changes at the company. Their newest EV model is going to take the world by storm.

If you're feeling confused by the naming, here's the breakdown - sometime in the middle of 2020, Hyundai decided to transform the Ioniq from merely a model name to an entire electric-vehicle sub-brand for the Korean automaker. Yes, the Ioniq Hybrid and EV of old is gone - to be replaced by an entire range of EV models. 

The first to be launched will come in the next few weeks, and it'll be known as the Hyundai Ioniq 5. In true modern launch fashion, it's the SUV body form that gets the priority - as the Ioniq 5 will be a mid-sized SUV or crossover depending on where you stand.

It will be based heavily on the 45 EV concept car that made its debut in 2019, with sharp edges and lines for that true futuristic look. More important than that is the fact that a five-minute charge on a fast charger will yield 100 km of range, by WLTP standards. 

The Ioniq 5, like a couple of electric cars coming to the market, will also feature bi-directional charging whereby you can charge the car (as you would expect), but the car can also supply power from its battery if need be. This power can be used to help get another electric vehicle going, or power a couple of appliances for 24 hours or so, based on 3.5 kW of power.

Sitting on the E-GMP platform that we talked about previously, the Ioniq 5's architecture sings to the tune of 800 volts, with DC charging at up to 350 KW. WLTP standards would rate the range at 550 km with the 73 kWh spec battery, and a flat to 80% charge could just take 18 minutes. The century sprint? 5.2 seconds - thanks to a power output of 308 hp.

In terms of size, you can expect the Ioniq 5 to be a little shorter than the Tucson while being a little wider than the Santa Fe. That's a pretty decent package to run around with for the urban dweller, although whether we will be getting this particular EV anytime soon may depend more on our charging infrastructure.
