BMW Outsources X1 Production to VDL Nedcar, Holland

BMW today announced that as of August 2017, it will begin manufacturing the X1 at the VDL Nedcar plant in the Netherlands, supplementing existing production capacity in Regensburg, Germany.

The move, which was jointly announced today by the BMW Group and the VDL Group, is in line with strong global demand for the X1 which required additional capacity to supplement production at the BMW Group plant in Regensburg, where the second generation of this successful model has been manufactured since July 2015.

However, as busy as it is with the production of eight different models built on a single line, the main volume of the BMW X1 will still be produced in Regensburg.

The BMW X1 will be the fourth BMW Group model to roll off the production lines at VDL Nedcar after the 3-door Mini Cooper, Cooper Convertible, and the Countryman.

In March 2017, VDL Nedcar will also start production of the new Mini Cooper S E Countryman ALL4, MINI’s first plug-in hybrid, and the sporty MINI John Cooper Works Countryman with 231 hp.

As for the Malaysian market, the X1 is currently being locally-assembled in Kulim, Kedah, with CKD packs sourced from the Regensburg plant. It is also worth mentioning that the BMW X1 has received EEV (energy efficient vehicle) status here.
