With Chip Shortages and MCO, April Vehicle Sales Down Compared to March

According to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), the latest passenger vehicle sales in April 2021 down by 11,250 units from March 2021 but up by 52,495 units compared to April 2020 though that is not a fair reflection as a strict MCO was in force in April 2020. 

Despite the enforcement of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Penang, Kelantan and Sarawak, vehicle sales in April 2021 was 396% higher than the corresponding period in 2020.

The rise in year-to-date sales figures is due to a more relaxed CMCO in April 2021, compared to the MCO implementation in mid-March to April 2020. However, April 2021 had its own challenges.

According to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), the shortage of computer chips impacted the sales of some makes.

Data for April also showed that the industry volume was lower from the 63,878 units sold in March or a 12.3% drop compared to March 2021, likely due to movement restrictions in several states during the period. TIV stood at 199,556 units versus 105,424 units in the same period last year.

Sales volume in May 2021 is expected to be lower than April 2021, as the implementation of the Movement Control Order 3.0 will affect businesses and traffic flowing into showrooms. A shorter working month due to the Hari Raya festive holidays and the continuing shortage of computer chips will further affect sales.
