Toyota Prius In Malaysia Not Affected By Latest Recall

Buying Guides

You may have caught wind of the news on international sites, that some 625,000 units of the Toyota Prius a (alpha), Prius v, Prius + and the Auris Hybrid, have been recalled globally for a software glitch that could result in the failure of the hybrid powertrain.

Fortunately Prius owners in Malaysia need not worry, as UMW Toyota Motor has recently confirmed: primarily because the above-mentioned models aren’t sold here. The vehicle we have here is the Toyota Prius, not the Prius a, Prius + or the Auris Hybrid. In its brief statement, we were told that:

“Recently TMC issued a press release regarding a recall of Prius a (alpha), Prius v, Prius + and Auris Hybrid. We would like to clarify that the recall does not affect UMW Toyota Motor as these models are not introduced or being sold by UMW Toyota Motor in Malaysia.”

Affected vehicles are located primarily in the US, Australia and Japan. Toyota is recalling these affected models in for a software upgrade to the affected ECU units. Regarding the issue, Toyota issued the following statement:

“In the involved vehicles, the current software settings for the motor/generator control ECU and hybrid control ECU could result in higher thermal stress in certain transistors, potentially causing them to become damaged. If this happens, various warning lights will illuminate and the vehicle can enter a failsafe mode. In rare circumstances, the hybrid system might shut down while the vehicle is being driven, resulting in the loss of power and the vehicle coming to a stop.”
