Mother's Day is all about appreciating the person who has given you the best things in life: love, care, and incredible home-cooked food. There's a reason why they say heaven is underneath a mother's foot, because without them, our life would be a living hell.

One of the grandest gestures you can give Mom on Mother's Day is a new car obviously, so without further ado, here's 2021's list of Mom-cars! 

2021 Toyota Yaris

If your Mom likes a bit of a sporty drive, then the 2020 Toyota Yaris should fit the bill. It's one heck of a car, and for those who say that the car is expensive, you're just wrong because you get what you pay for. 

When it comes to the drive, it has the perfect balance of comfort and sportiness. It's really cushy when traveling through bad roads and has great handling for when Mom wants to unleash the Danica Patrick in her. Yes, it is not the most powerful car, but it can still move fast in a straight line on the highway, snake its way swiftly through traffic in town or carry speed through bendy B-roads.

Toyota really did hit a home run when they created the Yaris. If we had to nitpick one thing we didn't like about it, it would be the CVT transmission, but then again, it is one of the better CVTs out there. We're just being elitist!

Above all else, the Yaris is simple to drive. Any Mom could get in and be comfortable with it in a drive or two. The 2021 Toyota Yaris facelift is also now open for booking, so you'd be able to get your Mom the freshest Yaris around.

2021 Proton Saga

For those on a smaller budget and looking to shop around the RM30k mark, the third generation Proton Saga must be considered. The car now includes design cues from the Proton X70, Proton Iriz and the Proton Persona, bringing it up to date. 

The naturally aspirated 1.3-litre DOHC VVT engine is no longer paired to a CVT made by Punch Powertrain, but instead a four-speed torque converter automatic gearbox sourced from Hyundai. The level of refinement and NVH is also quite good, so Mom won't feel like she is driving an empty can.

You can even teach Mom how to open the boot using the flip key fob which will come in handy when she needs to fill up the car with groceries. With a four-star ASEAN NCAP rating, you can also be sure that Mum will be safe when out on the road. 

2021 Proton X50 

Proton's new boy is so versatile it can pretty much fit into anybody's lives - including Mom's. With an efficient and refined 1.5-litre turbocharged engine hiding underneath the bonnet, the X50 would surely please the fussiest of mothers. The fact that the X50 has ADAS also means that your Mom will always have a computer looking out for her in the safety department.

Since it's a crossover SUV it won't be too tall for her either which should make it easier getting in and out of the car especially for those aging muscles and bones. Being a Proton, the X50 would also be easy to maintain with a plethora of service centres around Malaysia. Above all else, she'll appreciate the comfort of the car as well as the luxury touches which punch above its class. 

Okay, your Mom might not be able to get the car straight away, but you can be creative and give her a cardboard version first, with a note saying that it'll arrive in six months. We think it is worth the wait, and we're pretty sure your Mom would love it when it arrives.

2021 Perodua Ativa

What's there really to say about the Ativa that most don't already know about? Oh yeah, this one.... it'll be the perfect car for your Mom. There's no denying that the Perodua Ativa is the value king among the many vehicles on this list, but just because it's packed full of value, it doesn't mean that it doesn't have the quality to match it.

The interior of the Perodua SUV no longer feels like a budget car, instead, it feels like an interior that is well designed and put together as well as sophisticated. All the materials feel like they'll last the test of time, and the inclusion of digital screens makes it feel modern.

One of the best features of the Perodua Ativa is, of course, its mighty 1.0-litre turbocharged engine. It's small but powerful and fuel-efficient too. It'll probably surprise your Mom as it really doesn't feel like a Perodua. The car is also Perodua's safest to date, with a host of advanced safety features. Here's a top tip, get her the H variant as it hits the sweet spot for the amount of safety tech it has. 

The Myvi would have usually made this list, but we feel the Ativa is more Mom's cup of tea now.

2021 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe

If your Mom is not ready to give up on premium compact sedans where others have moved on to SUVs, then perhaps the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe would be a sensible choice. With a price tag just above 200k, you could say that this is one of the most affordable new BMWs around.

With 140hp and 220Nm of torque, it's not the most powerful BMW around but it'll get you up to speed fast. The standard M Sport package also adds some spice to the car’s look with its 18-inch wheels running 225/40 Bridgestone Turanza run-flat tyres, the subtle M Aerodynamics package, and gloss black contrasting accents. Inside, too, there’s the leather M Sport steering wheel, front sports seats, and M door sills finishers.

That being said, the cabin does seem to be surprisingly large for what is a rather small BMW.
