Subaru BRZ tS Launched In Japan: STI Tuned, Limited Production Model

Subaru recently launched the BRZ tS in Japan that receives significant performance components developed by the car maker’s motorsport division and customising arm, Subaru Tecnica International (STI).

That’s right, the ‘tS’ in the name refers to ‘tuned by STI’ and only 300 units of this limited-edition model will be sold at a cost of 3,990,000 to 4,071,000 yen (RM121,803 to RM124,295) depending on the specifications chosen.

The new BRZ tS employs STI-developed suspension and chassis upgrades which include, among other things: lateral link with pillow ball bush (front inside, rear inside), front suspension (inverted-strut front suspension) and coil springs, rear damper and coil springs, flexible V-shaped bar, flexible draw stiffener (front), and large-diameter drive shaft.

STI has also gone to work to tune the BRZ tS’ Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) and for a better aural experience, did the same for the Sound Creator filter as well. The car also receives 18-inch aluminium wheels wrapped in 225/40ZR18 Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres which are stopped by Brembo brakes front and rear.

Under the hood, the familiar FA20 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine still produces 200hp and 205Nm of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual or automatic transmission with the former allowing for the more affordable price tag.

On the outside, the BRZ tS receives a few cosmetic updates. New front and rear bumpers, LED lamps, black coloured door mirros and roof antenna, and a generous garnishing of STI badges complete the look.

The cabin receives a similar treatment as well with new Recaro-designed front bucket seats that are upholstered in black leather and Alcantara including parts of the door trim for starters. Elsewhere, the steering wheel, gear knob, instruments, and push-start button are all designed by STI and feature the STI logo on them. A “tS Limited Edition 300” ornament indicates to passengers that this is something special.

Subaru is looking to make the STI performance brand as recognisable as BMW’s M or Mercedes-Benz’s AMG brands are and with the introduction of the Subaru BRZ  STI Performance Concept in New York and this BRZ  tS is a good start.
