Perodua Offers to Supply Engines and Transmission to Proton

Auto News

Perodua has offered to supply its range of engines and transmissions for use in Proton models, President and CEO Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh revealed.

Speaking to the media whilst announcing Perodua’s first half sales performance at the company’s flagship showroom in Petaling Jaya, Aminar said that Perodua had, with the support of its technical partner Daihatsu, offered to supply the latest-generation 1.3- and 1.5-litre NR-series four-cylinder engines to Proton.

According to Aminar, Proton has yet to officially respond to the offer, and there is no indication on Proton’s interest to the matter either way.

Perodua currently operates two engine manufacturing facilities in Malaysia. The new NR-series Dual VVT-i engines are being manufactured in the newly-launched joint-venture plant with Daihatsu located at Sendayan, Negri Sembilan.

The 1.3-litre NR engine was newly introduced in the Bezza. Its 1.5-litre sibling currently powers the Toyota Avanza, and is expected to feature in the facelifted Toyota Vios to be introduced later this year. There are no announced plans for Toyota to source engines from the Sendayan plant.

Proton's current range of engines consist primarily of derivatives of the Campro family in 1.3- and 1.6-litre displacements. The newly-launched Proton Perdana, meanwhile, is powered by Honda's 2.0- and 2.4-litre i-VTEC engines. Earlier this year, Proton themselves had announced a RM600 million engine programme slated to develop no less than six new engine variations.
