We've written before about how NCAP testing around the world has disparities and how regulators are trying to unify testing and standards across the world, but there are some cars that will score flying colours even without any difference in standards or requirements. In the case of the Perodua Ativa, MIROS has just confirmed that it has achieved that sought after 5-star rating. Honestly though, it was no surprise that the Ativa made the cut - and the first piece of evidence that points to it is the fact that the Daihatsu Rocky managed to score five stars in the Japan NCAP testing program, with 85.7 out of 100 points. Since it's the closest thing to an Ativa, it would make sense that the Ativa would follow - and it's important to remember that even the base model Ativa gets the full ASA 3.0 suite of safety systems. If we were to look at the DNGA chassis alone, it performs fairly well in crash testing too. Looking at the Rocky's results, pedestrian protection was a 4 out of 5, knee impact was a 5 out of 5, along with full 5 out of 5 marks for offset collisions and driver side collisions. The only mark downs for the Rocky were for a 4 out of 5 for the driver when it came to full frontal collision, and 4 out of 5 for both driver and passenger when subjected to rear end collisions. In contrast, the Daihatsu Tanto - which also uses the DNGA platform - scores lower in a couple of categories. For the full frontal collision, driver protection gets a 3 out of 5 score. For offset collisions, the passenger gets a 3 out of 5 score. When it comes to rear end collisions, however, the Tanto manages slightly better with 5 out of 5 for both driver and passenger. Either way, it's proof that the DNGA is a solid platform when it comes to physical crash protection - on par with a Volkswagen Polo and Mercedes-Benz C-Class in fact, and even bettering them with rear-end collision scores. To get a full five star rating comes back to whether a car has active safety systems as that has become almost a requirement in this day and age, and once again it's worth noting that every variant of the Ativa gets features like Lane Departure Warning and Prevention, pre-collision warning and braking up to 120 km/h that includes motorbike and bicycle detection, and better night time functionality.
