Paris 2016: 2017 LR Discovery Revealed Ahead of Show

Land Rover has just taken the wraps off the all-new Discovery in the UK ahead of the Paris Motor Show where it was initially supposed to make its world debut.

Unveiled at the company’s headquarters in Warwickshire earlier today, the new Discovery is bigger, lighter, more powerful, and cleaner than the outgoing model.

Design wise, it is obvious that the fifth-gen ‘Disco’ is inspired by the Discovery Vision Concept, featuring more curves compared to the rather boxy predecessor.

Powering the new Discovery is JLR’s 340hp, 3.0-liter supercharged V6 Ingenium engine which will be available on all trims, paired to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, with a choice of single or two-speed Torsen-based torque biasing center gearing. It is said that a 254 hp 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine will also be available.

Thanks to Land Rover’s decision to replace the steel ladder chassis with aluminium monocoque frame, the Discovery is now lighter by about 400kg.

Measuring at 4,970mm long with a wheelbase length of 2,923mm, the new Discovery is now 140mm longer, and promises to offer a significantly roomier cabin than before. Besides that, the vehicle’s ground clearance which has increased by 43mm now enables the Discovery to wade water that is 900mm deep.

Dubbed as Land Rover’s most capable SUV to date, the new Discovery comes with many new and innovative features such as:

• Stadium seating
• Powered, remotely controlled seats
• 10-inch touch-screen
• Independent self-levelling air suspension
• Terrain Response 2 System
• All Terrain Progress Control
• Up to 9 USB ports
• In-car 3G Wi-Fi Hotspot
• Activity Key
• Split rear tailgate

Expected to go on sale globally in mid-2017, JLR said that the first 600 units of the new Discovery seven-seater will be badged as high-spec launch editions.

It is said that there will also be a Stealth edition which will feature leather trim, sports wheels and pedals, privacy glass and a two-tone paint job.
