Mazda Adds Hard Top RF Variant to MX-5 Range – Becomes A Fastback Too!

Auto News

Loved the soft-top Mazda MX-5 but prefer the security of a hard-top? The Mazda MX-5 RF (short for Retractable Fastback) is Mazda’s latest addition to the MX-5 range.

Previewed ahead of the opening of the New York International Auto Show, the MX-5 RF features a unique retractable hard-top that when up, transforms the roadster into a fastback coupe, complete with a dummy rear three-quarter window. Brilliant!

The power retractable roof opens and closes the press of a button while moving at speeds of up to 10km/h.

Interestingly, boot space remains the same as the soft-top model.

Powertrain options remain unchanged. Globally, the MX-5 RF will be available with a choice of either a 1.5-litre SkyActiv-G or a 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G engine, paired to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The MX-5 RF will debut wearing Mazda’s latest signature colour – Machine Grey, the same colour painted on the all-new CX-9. Like Mazda’s Soul Red signature colour, Machine Grey is used to intensify the contrast between light and shadow with a sleek, high-density finish, it gives the impression that the vehicle’s body was sculpted from a solid block of steel.

The MX-5 RF will go on sale in 2017 but Mazda have yet to reveal any details about its price.
