LA 2018: All-New Mazda 3 To Premiere – New Engine, New Platform

Auto News

Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that the all-new Mazda 3 will debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show.

According to Mazda, the all-new 3 will adopt a more matured interpretation of its Kodo design, as previewed by the Kai Concept first seen at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.

In an earlier teaser video released by the Hiroshima-based firm, the side profiles of the all-new 3 can be seen briefly, clearly inspired by the Kai Concept, albeit with regular door handles and side mirrors.

Mazda has also confirmed that the all-new 3 will mark the beginning of a whole new generation of vehicles, as it will be the first model to feature the new SkyActiv-X powertrain. More details can be found here.

To recap, Mazda’s new SkyActiv-X engine utilizes compression ignition as opposed to regular spark ignition. As a result, fuel efficiency of the SkyActiv-X engine will be superior as opposed to regular engines, whilst offering improved engine response.

Last but certainly not the least is the new platform that will be the basis of the all-new Mazda 3. One of the key changes Mazda has done is to replace the multilink rear suspension with a new Mazda-patented torsion beam design, featuring a diameter that progressively thickens from the middle to the sides.

According to Mazda, the new torsion beam design is less complicated with as it has fewer moving parts, allowing for better control of mechanical noise and vibration, while at the same time retaining the high level of control that the multilink set up is famed for.

The 2018 edition of the Los Angeles Motor Show will run from 30th November till 9th December.
