KL Supercar Drag Race Receives Overwhelming Response

The inaugural Kuala Lumpur Supercar Drag Race which took place over the weekend at Dataran Merdeka was without a doubt, a massive hit.

According to Nazir Hussin Akhtar Hussin, the organising committee chairman of the KL Supercar Drag Race 2016, the event attracted more than 10,000 visitors from last Friday till yesterday, and saw the venue constantly being filled with people from the moment the first car took off until the last car crossed the finish line.

Separated into 11 categories, more than 1,000 cars participated in the event which ended at about 6.30pm yesterday. Despite the sudden downpour on Saturday and also Sunday, the participants and visitors showed full support throughout.

Although the event was named a ‘Supercar’ drag race, not all the cars racing were exotics. In fact, the category for cars below 500hp was dominated by Volkswagen Golfs and Mercedes-Benz A45 AMGs. The stars of the whole race were of course, the Nissan GTR R35.

This was simply because the GTR was not only big in quantity, but also turned out to be among the fastest of the lot, dominating the Supercar 4WD Stage 2 below, Supercar and EuroSuperSport Open 4WD categories.

Those who came to feast their eyes on Italian supercars such as Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Maseratis on Saturday during qualifying had the time of their lives but unfortunately, those who visited Dataran Merdeka on Sunday were rather disappointed as most of the cars in action were GTRs as the Godzillas were the more powerful cars in the lot.
