Auto News

Mr. Lau Yit Mun, the former managing director of Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) has been recruited by Proton to take up a new position as Director of Sales. Lau has been with Proton since Feburary this year. His appointment is the latest by Proton, which under China’s Geely ownership, has headhunted multiple big names in industry to join its new management team.

Apart from Lau, the new management team at Proton now include Datuk Takashi Hibi, the former Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor, Professor Dr. Winfried Vahland, former Chairman and CEO of Skoda, and Yoshiya Inamori, former Vice-President of Peugeot Citroen Mitsubishi Automobiles Russia.

Prior to Lau’s departure, HSDM had successfully launched the Ioniq Hybrid, which at RM100,388 is the most affordably priced car that comes equipped with a full suite of advanced driving assistance systems - including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, and adaptive cruise control.

He also oversaw the renewal of Hyundai’s line-up, beginning with the MD generation Elantra, followed by the all-new Sonata, Tucson, Veloster, Starex and Santa Fe, as well the addition of a new generation of T-GDi engines on the Elantra Sport, Tucson and Veloster. Earlier, he had also introduced Hyundai’s Global Dealer Space Identity (GDSI) retail format to Malaysia.

In the interim, Lau’s position at HSDM is being filled by Mr. Dennis Ho, who is currently holding a concurrent position as Managing Director for Sime Darby Motors (Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan).
