First-Ever Polestar 2 In The Region Being Sold In Malaysia

The Polestar 2 has landed in Malaysia - making it the first Polestar to ever be introduced in this region.

There are not many things Malaysia can make a claim to fame to, especially when it comes to full electric cars.

We've never really been the first to have anything electric car related, not even in the region but this changed recently thanks to Vision Motorsports Sdn Bhd, who just imported the first Polestar 2 into Malaysia as well as the region.

Located at Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara, Vision Motorsport is synonymous with exotic full-electric cars as they were one of the first to import Tesla Electric cars and now Polestar. Vision Motorsport is also one of the first private car dealers in Malaysia to offer a free high-speed charging (DCFC) station at their showroom. 

The Polestar 2 in their showroom is a made in China high-performance electric car created by Volvo's sub-brand Polestar. Although headquartered in Gothenburg, Polestar manufactures all their cars in a state-of-the-art facility in China. 

As the first fully electric vehicle to emerge from Volvo Cars, the Polestar 2’s rollout is most definitely a landmark event for the Swedish marque, doubly so as the four-door fastback is aimed at the lucrative premium entry-level EV market, directly facing off against the Tesla Model 3 and its ilk.

Sitting on the same Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) as the XC40, the Polestar 2 certainly puts up one hell of a fight; at least on paper. The floor-mounted batteries, comprised of 27 lithium-ion modules, are rated to store 78kWh of charge, good for a range of up to 500km based on the WLTP testing cycle. 

It packs a wallop in terms of performance as well thanks to its dual 150kW electric motors, providing the car with all-wheel drive and a combined output of 408hp and 660Nm of torque. Polestar claims the car will sprint to 100km/h from rest in under 5 seconds. 

By contrast, the Tesla Model 3 in its priciest configuration (at the time of writing) sports a 75kWh battery and an advertised maximum range of 518km. It also claims the acceleration crown too, needing a supercar-like 3.4 seconds to reach 100km/h. 

The interior of the Polestar 2 is kitted with what Polestar calls weave tech material which is inspired by wetsuits thus making it resistant to water and dirt. The grey and black theme in the cabin has this business feel going for it. When compared to the Tesla Model 3 showroom car at Vision Motorsports, the seats in the Polestar 2 felt firm yet comfortable unlike the soft plush feeling seats in the American electric car. 

Raja Petra who owns Vision Motorsports said that once the VTA (vehicle type approval) has been approved, the Polestar 2 will be priced between RM370k - RM420k but he is trying his hardest to price it as a sub RM400k electric car.

Right now, only a single unit of the Polestar 2 has been imported as a market tester, and if things go well, Vision Motorsports will bring in more of them, including the optional Performance version which adds on Öhlins dampers, Brembo brakes and 20-inch forged alloy wheels, as well as gold interior and exterior accents such as the seat belts and brake callipers.
