Chengdu 2016: Honda Gienia Launched For China

First introduced in the form of the ‘Concept B’ in June, the Honda Gienia as it is known now, has made its official debut at the ongoing 2016 Chengdu Auto Show. Designed exclusively for the China market, it is said that the car will be launched in November and sold between 75,000 110,000 yuan.

It's essentially a hatcback version of a Honda City, but just in case you are wondering "Isn't the Honda Jazz a hatchback version of a Honda City?," the simple answer is that China is a huge market and like many other brands, Honda vehicles are sold via two distributors, Guangqi Honda and Dongfeng Honda, each selling different models.

The City and Jazz are sold by Guangqi Honda and to keep Dongfeng Honda happy, Honda has to provide equivalent models for the City/Jazz, and this Genia is one of such model. 

Sharing the same platform as the Honda City/Jazz City, the Gienia features a large Solid ‘Wing Face’ fascia with a large grille, projector headlamps, LED combination taillights, five-spoke alloy wheels, and parking sensors on the outside.

Inside, the Gienia is fitted with Honda’s LaneWatch monitoring system, a sunroof, keyless entry, touchscreen infotainment system, generous dose of leather upholstery, and a reverse camera.

Made at Dongfeng Honda, the Gienia is powered by a 1.5 liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 131 hp and 155 Nm, mated to a five-speed manual or a CVT. 

Measuring at 4,517mm long, 1,705mm wide, and 1,477mm high with a wheelbase length of 2,600mm, the Gienia will be competing with cars like the Citroen c-Elysee, Volkswagen Jetta, and the Chevrolet Cavalier in China.

In case you’re wondering if the Gienia will be coming here, Honda announced that there are currently no plans for export or for production of the car in other countries yet. It will remain as a China-only model.
