Favourable taxation and incentives from the government mean that these models are usually significantly cheaper than their more conventional counterparts, and in the case of BMW Malaysia it has led to the sale of many units of the BMW 330e, X5 xDrive 40e, 530e, 740Le, and of course the MINI Countryman PHEV. But as far as ownership of a hybrid vehicle goes, there’s always the looming question of battery lifespan. Older hybrid models that were introduced to our market used to suffer from battery degradation issues over the course of ownership, and when it came time to replace the battery it was an extremely painful bill that owners had to face. Since then, companies have started to offer longer and longer warranties specifically for the battery component of a hybrid vehicle, and BMW Group Malaysia is adding to this with an additional 2 year, 60,000 km warranty for the battery. The price for this stands at RM 2,200 for every PHEV model they sell, with the exception of the 740Le which has the extended warranty for RM 7,600. If you select the package, it gives you total coverage for up to 8 years and 160,000 km – whichever comes first – which is usually well within the range of a Malaysian’s ownership tenure for a car. It’s definitely a welcome reassurance for those who are running these PHEVs on a daily basis where mileage and usage can rack up very quickly. The PHEV Battery Warranty Programme is available from now until 31 st December 2020.
