Beijing 2018: Lexus To Unveil New Model, All-New ES?

Lexus has teased us with a rather interesting image of a new model with their brand identifying spindle grille.

Due to be fully unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show later this month, there are no accompanying information on this new model, apart from the headline of ‘Expect the Unexpected’.

The pattern within the new spindle grille is also of big interest, as it is a noticeable departure from the usual patterns of either diamond mesh or horizontal bars.

Looking at the range of newly-launched Lexus models recently, one might assume it is another SUV. However, we firmly believe this could well be the all-new Lexus ES sedan, which is due for replacement soon. Coincidentally, the facelift Lexus ES model was also unveiled in China, at the Auto Shanghai in 2015.  

We recently spoke to the Lexus LS 500 Chief Engineer, Toshio Asahi, and he explained that the spindle grille is a very core part of Lexus' identity, and to establish a design identity, it needs to be reinforced over multiple generations.
