All-New Subaru WRX Confirmed For 2021 Debut - Time To Get Excited

Auto News

Subaru has released its first teaser of the upcoming 2022 Subaru WRX, officially confirming the return of the rally bred nameplate after a rather lengthy absence. In that time, the automaker’s lineup has become decidedly SUV-focused, leading some to doubt if such a car would ever return.

As before, the fast all-wheel drive saloon will be based on the current-era Impreza, which has itself been around now for some 5 years since its official unveiling at the 2016 New York Motor Show in 5th-generation form, so Subaru - or more accurately, STI - has had plenty of time to adapt it as their new performance platform.

Subaru: Hope you like shadows!

It’s a sole dark image of the car being shown here but it's enough to get any enthusiast excited. We can clearly see the characteristic bonnet scoop, widened stance, and a silhouette that’s typical of the WRX’s three-box design. We are, however, missing the classic big rear wing, but that might be coming later.

Subaru, within the accompanying microsite, promises that the “newest WRX will be here so fast, it will take your breath away”. Good news to those not wishing to wait too long before its full reveal and possible market launch. It will emerge as a 2022 model year, making its debut before the end of 2021 very possible.

The car is “completely redesigned”, which is to be expected since the older model first poked its head out in 2014. The Impreza’s DNA will still shine through but expect it to also bear plenty of resemblance to the stunning Viziv Performance concept from 2017.

We’re pretty confident that the FA24 2.4-litre flat-four engine will be at the heart of the all-new WRX, albeit supplemented by a turbocharger and tuned to the region of 300hp or beyond. Prior to its discontinuation in 2018, the older car was pumping out close to 350hp in certain limited run editions, so we can expect quite a varied assortment of power and torque outputs over its life cycle.

One does start to wonder if Subaru or Toyota were brave enough to slot this upgraded engine into second-generation the BRZ or GR86. Selling it might be a fun experiment, at the very least.
