Auto News

The next generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class have been spotted with minimal disguise, showing us a clear view of the hatchback's front and side profile as well as the tail end of the sedan model. The two test mules spotted by European spy photographers are finished in a unique shade of orange, typically used for the company's internal crash test evaluation.

Compared to the outgoing model, the new generation W177 A-Class features a more pronounced front grille with a pair of sharper-looking headlights. The rear end also receives a pair of revised tail lights. Also visible are the window frames on the A-Class Sedan, which differs from the CLA's frameless design.

As for A-Class Sedan, this model is said to be a different product from the CLA that we've gotten accustomed to. According to sources, the A-Class Sedan will be a less sporty but more practical version of the CLA. The A-Class Sedan will be competing against the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series Sedan, though the latter is a China-only affair.

Underneath, the new W177 A-Class and A-Class Sedan sits on an updated Modular Front Architecture (MFA), a platform that could potentially spawn multiple new models, including the new CLA, GLA and B-Class. As before, the revised MFA platform gets MacPherson struts up front and multi-link rears.

The W177 generation A-Class is also slated to feature Mercedes-Benz’s range of new engines, including a plug-in hybrid variant.

Mercedes-Benz is also expected to introduce the hotter A45 AMG at a later date, likely with more than 400 ponies on tap. The outgoing A45 AMG boasts 376 hp drawn from its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder.
