All-New 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman Makes Malaysian Debut – From RM530,000

Auto News

Formerly known as just the Cayman, the all-new 718 Cayman follows Porsche’s new naming convention for its entry-level four-cylinder sports cars, allowing Porsche to make a direct reference to its classic mid-engine four-cylinder 718 race car built between the late ‘50s and early ‘60s.

Like its recently launched convertible twin the 718 Boxster (from RM480,000), potential customers of the 718 Cayman can choose from two engine options – both four-cylinders, mounted midship driving the rear-wheels of course.

The standard car comes with Bi-Xenon headlamps but the ‘4-point’ LED unit with integrated LED daytime running light seen here is an optional extra.

Behind, the rear wing extends automatically at speeds above 120 km/h. The boot opens to reveal a rather small-ish 275-litres (150-litre more than the Boxster) capacity boot but as the engine is mounted in the middle, there is additional storage space in front, where the bonnet pops open to reveal 150-litre capacity front boot.

At speeds of above 120 km/h, the rear wing rises automatically to reduce lift.

Inside, the standard car’s dashboard is trimmed in high-gloss back but customers can opt for a body-colour-coded interior. The steering wheel is derived from the plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder hypercar but there’s also the option of a smaller diameter GT sports steering wheel.

The standard infotainment is a 7-inch touchscreen Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system but customers can choose to upgrade this to include either the Connect, Navigation, Connect Plus modules or an 8-speaker 150 watts audio power Sound Package Plus system.

When equipped with the Sport Chrono Package, the 7-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic 718 Cayman and 718 Cayman S accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and 4.2 seconds respectively.

Unlike grey-imported Porsches, all officially imported Porsches sold by Sime Darby Auto Performance comes with a 4-year warranty plus a 4-year/100,000 km free service and maintenance package.

Porsche fans living in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia will be pleased to know that Sime Darby Auto Performance has now opened a new 3S centre in Jalan Baru in Seberang Perai, Penang.
