The front fascia features a new honeycomb grille, redesigned chrome signature wing, and slimmer headlights. At the rear, new tail lights incorporate distinctive two-layer moulded outer lens.Inside, the CX-5's dashboard has been made more symmetrical with increased focus on driver-orientation. The 7-inch MZD Connect touchscreen has been redesigned and repositioned higher up closer to the driver's natural line of sight.A total of three engines are being offered with the all-new CX-5, all of them being the familiar SkyActiv four-cylinder powerplants carried over from the predecessor. Base models get a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 162 hp and 210 Nm; middle of the range is occupied by a 2.5-litre mill with 192 hp and 257 Nm; lastly, the flagship variants are powered by a 2.2-litre turbodiesel with 173 hp and 420 Nm.All engines are paired with Mazda's in-house 6-speed SkyActiv-Drive automatic transmission as standard. The petrol models come exclusively in front-wheel drive configuration, whilst the torquier diesel powertrain is offered with a choice between front- and all-wheel drive. All variants of the CX-5 also come standard with G-Vectoring Control for more confident handling around corners. The availability of these new premium metallic colours for the first time in a locally-assembled Mazda model is made possible by the opening of a new state-of-the-art paint shop in the Kulim plant which cost Mazda the better part of RM 87 million.The new premium colours are painted with Mazda's Takuminuri painting technology, which is said to give a high-quality finish as if as hand-sprayed by a master craftsperson. It consists of three layers comprising clear, translucent, and reflective coats. The translucent layer features a high chroma colour pigment, whilst the reflective coat features light-absorbing flakes and aluminium flakes uniformly-sized and aligned horizontally to reflect light with lustre.Introduction of the all-new CX-5 at the Inokom plant started in August 2017. Thanks to newly-upgraded facilities, Mazda now has access to annual production capacity of 20,000 vehicles from the Kulim plant. The new paint shop also brings paint work quality of Malaysia-made Mazda vehicles on par with those made in Japan. Mazda is set to export the all-new CX-5 from Malaysia to Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Cambodia.The original CX-5 that was launched in 2011 as a CBU model and subsequently offered as CKD grew to become one of the most popular mid-sized SUVs in the market and was a key model for Mazda worldwide.
