The latest Electric Vehicle to pop up on your social media feeds? It's the Kia EV6 GT - the new flagship model for the Korean brand, and packing front and rear electric motors with an output of 577 hp and 740 Nm of torque. 0 to 100 km/h is done in just 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of over 300 km/h. These are not figures to sniff at and to show just how quick it is, Kia decided to throw it into a quarter-mile drag race with a bunch of supercars. Rather surprisingly, the EV came in second place. In a 400 metre drag race (a little short of a quarter mile) there are a number of things to consider when it comes to setting the best time. Arguably one of the most important things is your launch and how quickly you get off the line - and fortunately, that happens to be something electric motors are pretty good at. The electric motors are unmatched when it comes to getting off the line quickly, which is also why hybrids are so quick from a dead stop. But perhaps more important than that is the fact that the competition consisted more of sports cars than supercars. Let's take a look carefully; fighting the EV6 GT was a Lamborghini Urus (heavy), a Mercedes-AMG GT (the lowest powered variant), a McLaren 570S (the baby of the McLaren range), a Porsche 911 Targa 4 (the weakest Porsche 911 with the heaviest body and drag), and the Ferrari California T (an outdated, unloved Ferrari). It's no surprise then that the EV6 GT would take home such a position, but even then it is a very impressive step forward for the Korean brand. Even if the EV6 GT wasn't fighting against the pinnacles of performance, it shows that such a vehicle can still hold its own compared to more contemporary rivals. The EV6 will also be available with lower-end variants, from a 168hp rear-wheel-drive model, up to a 321 hp all-wheel drive unit with a long-range battery pack. With expected prices starting at 45,000 USD, if Kia even decides to bring it into Malaysia it would cost close to RM 300,000. It's not a bad amount to pay for a relatively modern engineering package.
