A Brief Look At The History Of The Mercedes-Benz C-Class In Malaysia

We take a brief look at the history of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class in Malaysia.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a car that can be considered as a permanent fixture on Malaysian roads. With the fifth-generation (W206) due to be launched in Malaysia next year, we thought we would look back at some of its previous generations and see what changes and innovations it brought with it.

For those unaware, the C-Class is Mercedes' line of compact executive cars and was the smallest model in the brand's line-up till 1997. It was made for small families and young executives who really wanted to make an impression. It's since become a staple in automotive lore.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class W202

The W202 series C-Class will always be remembered as the first vehicle in the world to be equipped with a common-rail injection diesel engine (C 220 CDI). It had a tough act to follow as it was the replacement for the venerable Mercedes-Benz 190e (W201), which is basically a C-Class before the nomenclature name change.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class W203

The W203 ushered the C-Class' into the new millennium and with it came along 20 new technical innovations, including adaptive front airbags, headlamp assist, multifunction steering wheel, and fibre optic cables. 

Mercedes-Benz C-Class W204

Most C-Class' before the W204 was considered more of a comfort cruising machine rather than a driver's car, but the W204 really did change that opinion as it brought the challenge to the dastardly BMW 3-series. With its classy looks and better driving dynamics, some people consider this as the pinnacle of the C-Class.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class W205

The current generation C-Class (W205) was the first C-Class to use Mercedes-Benz's MRA platform, which shares many of its contemporary leanings with its bigger brothers, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and S-Class models. The MRA architecture utilises a lot of aluminium, giving the C-Class a 100 kilogramme weight loss. Out of all the C-Class', this is probably the one that has the most attitude when it came to exterior design.
