After many months of speculations and spy shots, the 2021 Proton Iriz R3 has been finally unveiled, and as much as we are impressed with the overall black and yellow look of the car, we never thought the slapping of an R3 badge on the Proton hatchback would only bring it some cosmetic changes. Many were hoping that the revival of the R3 moniker would bring some added performance type hardware to the Proton Iriz, but it looks like maybe next time! What you get on the 2021 Proton Iriz R3 apart from its brand new black and yellow themed livery are new aerodynamic add-ons, in the form of some black and yellow aero looking side skirts and front splitter. The rear bumper and spoiler look like it was directly lifted off the regular Proton Iriz, except that on the R3, the rear spoiler comes with yellow stickers on the side with a big R3 logo in the middle. Another new addition to the Iriz is some yellow accents on the doors, ending with the number 83. This supposedly is a tribute to the number of the Iriz race car, from Team Proton R3. On the rear quarter window is also an R3 Champion Team sticker which pays homage to the Team R3 Iriz race car which won the 1000km Sepang Race twice. The front windshield and rear windows are also kitted with yellow R3 stickers to make it look more like the race car. Apart from the new front splitter, there's also now a yellow accent stretching across the front of the car, replacing the chrome trim which was seen on the regular Iriz. In our opinion, the most significant change to the Iriz is located at all four corners of the car, in the form of those beautiful 16-inch grey wheels. If you think it looks familiar, you are on to something there as it looks like a recycled Proton part which was first seen on the Proton Satria NEO CPS. The side mirrors are also splashed with yellow paint to complete the R3 look. On the inside, the yellow R3 theme continues through the R3 labelled carpet mats, R3 emblem on the dashboard, yellow accents at the meter cluster, and centre console knobs as well as the seats. The black leatherette seats feature yellow stitches as well as an R3 logo. There are no changes to the drivetrain; as the Iriz is powered by a 1.6-litre VVT four-cylinder petrol engine which outputs 107 hp and 150 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, mated exclusively to the Punch CVT-type automatic. The infotainment system is also unchanged from before. The 2021 Iriz R3 is a limited edition variant so you will be getting a unique car if you decide to splash RM52,900 on it.
