At one point, the fourth-generation Mazda 2 was all the rage in Malaysia. It was a supermini that offered great driving dynamics, style and good build quality from RM88k. In 2020 the facelifted version saw a price hike of RM16k for the little Mazda hatchback, and that hike in price pretty much killed the attractiveness of the car as it was just deemed too high of a price for a small Japanese hatchback. Since then, the car's demand in Malaysia has pretty much dwindled, but maybe the next-generation Mazda 2 will perk things up once again, because it sounds like Mazda are going all techy with the Mazda 2, even going as far as including some Mazda SkyActiv-X tech under the bonnet. According to reputable Japanese automotive portal, Best Car Web, the next Mazda 2 will be powered by Mazda's SkyActiv-X technology, this time in the form of a tiny 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine, which promises to be both frugal and fun. Reserved for the highest specification Mazda 2, the SKYACTIV-X engine will also supposedly be paired to a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which promises to make it one heck of a drivetrain for the Mazda 2. This does sound quite techy and expensive, which is why it has been suggested that a conventional petrol powertrain is planned for the lower variants. Design-wise, we expect the Mazda 2 hatchback to borrow some styling cues from the Mazda 3 Hatchback/Liftback, and the same applies to the sedan. If the Mazda 2 Hatchback follows the Mazda 3's style, then perhaps we will see a very stylish super little mini coming out of Mazda in the near future. It's been touted that a reveal will happen by September 2021 and we can't wait to see what the Hiroshima based company will unveil.
