2016 Mazda CX-9 enters production

Mazda Motor Corporation has just announced that it has commenced production of the all-new CX-9 three-row SUV. 

Currently being produced at Mazda’s Ujina plant No.1 in Hiroshima, Japan, the first units produced are said to be destined for the U.S. and Canada markets.

Being one of Mazda’s high-end models, the CX-9, which was first unveiled at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show, features the full range of Skyactiv technology and Kodo-Soul of Motion design.

To coincide with the commencement of production of the new model, Mazda has begun manufacturing a new 2.5-liter direct injection turbocharged gasoline engine called Skyactiv-G 2.5T at its Hiroshima Plant.

Aiming to sell 50,000 units annually, Mazda said that it is expecting the North American market to account for 80 per cent of its global sales of the CX-9. Sales of the new model is all set to start in mid-2016. 

The new CX-9 will be the first in Mazda’s line-up to receive their 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G 2.5T petrol engine which replaces the 3.7-litre V6 in the outgoing model, while outclassing it by every metric. 

The new turbo petrol unit, based on the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G offered in the Mazda CX-5 and Mazda 6, is now their most powerful generating up to 250PS and 420Nm of torque (in the North American version). Mazda is touting their Dynamic Pressure Turbo and cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system as the main advancements behind their new powerplant.
