Toyota Sienta Becomes Japan’s No.1 Selling MPV

The compact seven-seater Toyota Sienta has overtaken the Toyota Corolla to become Japan’s second best-selling model, and best-selling MPV.

The Sienta was launched in July 2015, and within two months, a total 15,113 units have already been delivered, according to data from the Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA).

Interestingly, the Sienta appears to have to affected sales of the Toyota Prius c, which is sold as the Aqua in Japan.  

After the Sienta was launched in July, sales of the Aqua dropped from 18,087 units in June, to 17,711  in July, and 12,390 in August – its lowest monthly sales in 2015.

While there is a correlation, we cannot conclude that the Sienta is taking away sales from the Aqua, as total passenger car sales for the month of August took a big hit across the board, with statistics from JADA showing a drop from 245,680 in July to 180,850 in August. Japan’s gross domestic product shrank 1.6 percent on an annualized basis in the April-June quarter, while private consumption fell 0.8 percent from the quarter before.

We are guessing that the Sienta is expected to make its Malaysian debut sometime between end-2016 to 2017, as spyshots of a ‘development mule’ had already been spotted in Thailand.
