Singapore 2019: All-New Mazda 3 Sedan Previewed, But Minus SkyActiv-X Engine

Just months after its global debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Motor Show, a left hand drive sedan version of the all-new Mazda 3 has been previewed at the ongoing Singapore Motor Show.

One of the key highlights of the fourth-generation Mazda 3 is the revolutionary SkyActiv-X powertrain. In short, the new SkyActiv-X engine utilizes compression ignition as opposed to regular spark ignition, which allows the engine to offer improved fuel efficiency and better engine response.

The preview version, however, sported a SkyActiv-G powertrain, similar to that of the current generation model, suggesting that the SkyActiv-X may not be offered for our region. Mazda also offers existing Skyactiv-G and SkyActiv-D (diesel) powertrains alongside the SkyActiv-X, depending on the market.

Another notable highlight of the new model is the SkyActiv Vehicle Architecture; the latest-generation platform that will underpin several Mazda models of the future.

Mazda has also ditched the current generation's multi-link rear suspension in favour of a new torsion beam design which features the world’s first progressively thickening beam diameter from the middle to the sides. Mazda claims that besides its simplicity, the system also creates less noise and vibration (good for NVH), and retains a high level of comfort.

The exterior has gone through a substantial update, inspired by the Mazda Kai Concept, the new car features slimmer headlights and a more aggressive front appearance thanks to a larger, more pronounced grille design.

Along the flanks, the all-new 3 has been redesigned with more sculpted surfaces, while the characteristic waistline that runs the length of the side also features a cleaner profile in the new car. Up top, the C-Pillar is more pronounced and the roofline tapers off more aggressively than the older model. The preview car also features 18-inch alloy wheels.

Round the back, the changes are closer in spirit to the concept car, the license plate holder has been moved to the rear bumper, allowing for a cleaner boot design, and slim tail lights with a unique circular light signature.

In terms of dimensions, the Mazda is 82 mm longer at 4,662 mm, 2 mm wider at 1,797 mm and 5 mm taller at 1,445 mm than the outgoing model.

On the inside, the completely redesigned interior features a more simplistic yet driver-centric cabin architecture. Taking cues from the larger Mazda 6, a free-standing 8.8-inch infotainment display sits on the centre of the dashboard, featuring Mazda latest MZD Connect system.

The air-conditioning controls are neatly tucked below the infotainment display with two vents angled at the driver, and passenger vents integrated into the multi-layer dashboard. A rotary control knob for the infotainment system can be found behind the gear lever, alongside the electric parking brake toggle.
