Peugeot Unveils All-New 2008, Full EV Variant

The compact crossover segment is one of the most hotly contested markets for manufacturers, and much of the effort that goes into developing new models is focused in this area. As such, keeping models fresh and relevant is more important than ever - and some companies are blessed with the right kind of timing to introduce a second generation. The all-new Peugeot 2008 sits on an all-new platform and features a vastly improved interior among many other standout features that will propel it to the top of its class.

For one, this new model has an all-electric variant known as the e-2008, which packs an electric motor pushing 136 hp and 260 Nm of torque, fed by a 50 kWh battery that provides a range of up to 310 km, according to the WLTP testing standards. This is important as companies are struggling to keep up with the European Union's insane carbon emissions targets, and an all-electric model definitely helps to that end.

As for the other variants, there are the turbocharged PureTech 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol models with outputs from 100 hp to 155 hp depending on the state of tune, along with the BlueHDI 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesels that push out between 100 and 130 hp. Both engines come with either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic gearbox depending on the variant, and styling and trim levels see various changes depending on the powertrain as well.

When it comes to the trim levels, there are four: Allure, Active, GT Line and GT - available across all variants, regardless of whether they're packing a petrol engine, a diesel engine, or an electric motor. Only the GT Line and GT models see the most aggressive styling, with 18-inch wheelsm full-LED projector headlights, and a slightly darker interior package that also includes mood lighting for a more youthful appeal.

As is the case with most compact crossovers, Peugeot seeks to break the monotony of boring interiors - although this move is becoming a little cliche. The exterior colours are vibrant as you would expect, but the interior also comes with either Orange or Blue tampo printing door decor, light blue or deep green upholstery, as well as Alcantara, leather, and technical mesh material choices. Higher end models can even change the colour of various decoration pieces around the interior via the touchscreen.

And that touch screen is certainly something. It's massive at 10-inches diagonally and located right in the middle of the dashboard, a nice complement to the Peugeot i-Cockpit 3D system that projects the instrument cluster like a hologram. Indications and warnings are dynamic and change in size and position to grab your attention, in turn reducing reaction times. The rest of the dashboard layout follows the most current Peugeot standards, which is a good thing. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink are all present - to the benefit of the technologically inclined.

Assistance systems are available as expected. Semi-autonomous driving is the name of the game, with functions like Lane Departure Avoidance and adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go function if you pick a model with the 8-speed automatic. Park Assist helps drivers get into their parking spots quickly and easily, as well as getting them out. Active blind spot monitoring as well as various warnings for lane departure or brake recommendations (i.e. low-key City Safety) also aid drivers in making it through traffic in one piece.

There's no word on when the 2008 will be hitting our shores, but knowing Peugeot's standing locally, we won't have to wait too long. The current generation 2008 that's offered locally is in dire need of an update to go toe-to-toe with revived and revised rivals, and this all-new model fulfils that requirement exactly.
