Geneva 2019: Mazda Introduces CX-30 – No, Not A Typo - Aims For Toyota C-HR

You read that right. Mazda has just unveiled an all-new model at the ongoing 2019 Geneva International Motor Show called the CX-30.

Slotting between the CX-3 and CX-5, the oddly-named CX-30 is the second model to be built on Mazda’s new generation platform after the all-new 3. The CX-30 comes in at 4,395 mm long, 1,795 mm wide, and 1,540 mm tall. The height of the CX-30 is identical to the CX-3, while the wheelbase of the CX-30 (2,655 mm) is longer than the CX-3 (2,570 mm). It's also very similar in size to the Toyota C-HR - 4,360 mm long, 1,795 mm wide and 1,565 mm tall, with a 2,640 mm wheelbase.

If you wondering wasn't there already a CX-4 that slots between a CX-3 and CX-5? You're right but the CX-4 is only available in China while this CX-30 is meant for the rest of the world. The CX-4 rides on a slightly longer 2,700 mm wheelbase but it is based on an older, previous generation CX-5's platform.

As for powertrains, the all-new CX-30 will be available with a 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G petrol engine, 1.8-litre SkyActiv-D diesel engine, and the new 2.0-litre SkyActiv-X petrol engine. Depending on variant, a six-speed manual or six-speed auto is fitted to the CX-30. Interestingly, Mazda adds that all petrol engines fitted to the CX-30 will come equipped with the mild hybrid assistance.

Moving into the cockpit, the CX-30 receives a dashboard that largely mirrors that of the all-new 3, albeit with a revised top tier that flows into the door panels. An 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is fitted as standard, as well as an 8-speaker configuration. The Mazda CX-30 can also be optioned with a custom tuned 12-speaker Bose sound system featuring an 8 cm centre speaker, a pair of rear satellite speakers, and a subwoofer.

In terms of safety equipment, the new Mazda CX-30 is available with Mazda’s i-ActiveSense suite of advanced driver aids, including Driver Monitoring, Front Cross Traffic Alert, and Cruising & Traffic Support. The new CX-30 also marks the introduction of a driver’s knee airbag on a Mazda vehicle for the first time ever.

Sales of the new Mazda CX-30 will start from Europe this summer, before it is rolled out to other markets.
