City Hall Allots RM5 Million To Expand Cycle Path Network In KL

In a move to encourage the use of alternative transportation around the city, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has set aside RM5 million to the expansion of the capital city's cycle path network which is due for completion by December 2015.

As reported by Bernama, DBKL’s deputy managing director Datuk Mohd Najib Mohd said the reasoning for the project was to encourage citizens to use bicycles to get around by providing a safe and comprehensive network of lanes just for their use.

It could either be used to get to a destination (such as work) directly or at least to the nearest rail station. Datuk Mohd Najib said: "For the project in Taman Melati, it has been completed and the public can cycle from their residence to the Taman Melati LRT station,”

"At Taman Metropolitan in Batu Kepong, it is 90% complete," he told reporters after attending the Hari Raya Aidilfitri 'dodol' making programme, held in conjunction with the KL Car Free Morning programme at Dataran DBKL today.

Finally, he added that the larger plan had also been put in place to expand cycle path networks in Cheras and Wangsa Maju, as well.

As well as the aim of reducing the number of cars on the road, the use of bicycles would encourage a healthier lifestyle among urban residents and will, hopefully, positively impact the air pollution levels in Kuala Lumpur should the practice be adopted widely.
