In terms of performance, the XC60 T8 Twin Engine combines a turbocharged and supercharged petrol engine with an electric motor that independently drives the rear axle to produce a combined system output of 407 hp (320 hp internal combustion engine + 87 hp electric motor) and 640 Nm (400 Nm internal combustion engine + 240 Nm electric motor) of torque.

The performance figures translate to a century sprint of 5.3 seconds and 2.1 litres of fuel consumed for every 100 km travelled. Since it's a plug-in hybrid, it is capable of a pure electric range of up to 45 km courtesy of the 10.4 kWh hybrid battery, centrally located in the tunnel of the car.

Unlike BMW plug-in hybrid models, VCM doesn't offer a charging wall box yet, although there are plans to do so in the future. At the moment, charging at home can be done via a supply cable that can be used on household 3-pin socket.

When charged using a 10A supply, it takes about 4 hours to complete a full charge. Of course, owners can also take advantage of any publically available chargers. The location and availability of most of these chargers can be found via the NewMotion app.

As for the locally-assembled XC60s, there will be two engine variants, namely the T8 Twin Engine and T5.

While the T8 Twin Engine will be offered in two trim levels – Inscription and Inscription Plus - the T5 will be offered in a single trim level.

Customers are free to choose from five exterior colour options which includes Ice White, Bright Silver, Osmium Grey, Onyx Black and Maple Brown. In response to customer demands, Volvo Car Malaysia has also added a second leather upholstery colour for locally-assembled variants – Maroon Brown – which will complement the usual Charcoal.

The current XC60 is Volvo’s best-selling vehicle, accounting for 30 percent of the company’s global sales.

VCM brought in less than 100 units of the CBU XC60, all of which have been spoken for upon today's launch. Despite that, VCM has stated that CKD deliveries will commence in April.

“Volvo has a vision that by the year 2020, no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car – this recent award underlines our leadership in safety technologies and makes the new XC60 one of the safest cars that we have ever made,” said Lennart Stegland, Managing Director, Volvo Car Malaysia.

Scoring a near perfect score of 98 per cent in the Adult Occupant category and 95 per cent in the Large Off-Road vehicle class, the new XC60 has been awarded Best Overall Performance by the Euro NCAP 2017, making it arguably the safest SUV out there at the moment.
