2021 (W167) Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 (CKD) Launched - RM475,501

At long last, the locally-assembled version Mercedes-Benz GLE now celebrates its official debut – the singular variant, dubbed the GLE 450 AMG Line comes in with a retail price tag of RM475,501.

However, it’s not exactly new, the fully-imported (CBU) version was first introduced in Malaysia in September 2019, and was available as a 5- or 7-seater, the CKD, version, on the other hand, will be sold exclusively as a 7-seater.

Powering the GLE 450 is a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol engine codenamed M256. The engine is aided by a mild hybrid system that houses an Integrated Starter/Generator (ISG) sandwiched between engine and transmission and engine. The mild-hybrid system or EQ Boost enhances power by 22 hp over short periods.

Drive to the front and rear axle after the (9G-tronic) nine-speed automatic transmission is intelligently split by a high-performance electronically controlled multi-disc clutch transfer case, which improves on-road handling and can call on the rear axle for additional traction when going off-road.

Other notable equipment highlights of the GLE 450 AMG Line include:

• E-Active Body air suspension system
• AIRMATIC adaptive suspension
• Adaptive Damping System - ADS (allows further user control of drive programs)
• Burmester Surround Sound System
• Panoramic sliding moonroof
• Acoustic windscreen and side windows
• Active Stop-and-Go full adaptive cruise control
• Powered rear sunshades

As for styling – the AMG Line includes specific items such as the aggressive-looking front and rear bumpers, diamond radiator grille with single louvre slats, body-coloured fender extensions, Multibeam LED headlamps, huge 21-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels with subtle gloss black highlights.

On the Inside, the simplistic dashboard architecture is crowned by dual 12.3-inch LCD widescreen cockpit displays as if it is floating on the fully leather-lined upper dashboard. All interface is controlled by the MBUX (NTG 6 - Mercedes-Benz User Experience) system and is compatible with Android Auto and Apple Carplay. The centre console features twin grab handles and anthracite open-pore oak wood trim elements.

Other highlights of this 7-seater interior include the Burmester Surround Sound System and 64-colour ambient lighting.

In terms of safety, the GLE 450 includes driving assistance systems such as Active Distance Distronic, Lane Tracking, Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and a 360-degree camera for all-round visibility. The GLE also features a knee airbag and side airbags for rear occupants.

Do note that the current price tag is in effect until the end of the tax-free incentive period. After which, the GLE 450 will be priced at RM 499,888 inclusive of the 10 percent sales tax.
