2017 Volvo V90 Estate makes global debut

After much anticipation, Volvo finally revealed the V90 yesterday in Stockholm, Sweden. The wagon, which is the latest model in the brand’s flagship 90 series, sits alongside the XC90 SUV and also the S90 luxury sedan which made its global debut recently. 

Powered by Volvo’s T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain, which uses a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired to an electric motor, the V90 kicks out 400hp and a pure electric range of 50km, according to the manufacturer.

Paired to the mill is an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Volvo claims that the V90 T8 will go from 0-100km/h in just 5.2 seconds, while emitting just 47g/km of CO2, with a fuel economy of an impressive 2.1 litres per 100km.

Besides the powertrain package, the V90 also shares Volvo’s specially-designed and fully modular Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform with the S90 and the XC90.

One of the main highlights of the V90 is that it delivers Volvo’s latest safety features, which includes the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive technology, which is one of the most advanced standard safety package on the market.

This technology even comes with large animal detection and run-off road mitigation, and smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay connectivity. Other features include LED lights, leather seats, sat-nav and a 9-inch touchscreen display.  The total luggage capacity on the other hand, stands at 1,526 litres.

While standard safety kit in the V90 includes city safety tech, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, road sign recognition, a speed limiter, and  run-off road mitigation,  optional safety equipment includes a blind spot monitor, rear collision warning, cross traffic alert, a 360-degree parking camera and Volvo's Park Assist Pilot software.

Measuring 4,953mm long with a wheelbase of 2,921mm, the V90 falls somewhere between a Mercedes-Benz E-Class and an S-Class in terms of size, in case you’re wondering just how big this car is.

Available in two-trims (‘Momentum’ and ‘Inscription’) in markets like the UK, the V90 is expected to cost more than the S90, and will most likely head to dealerships next year. However, there has not been any official indication by Volvo Cars Malaysia on whether the V90 will be heading our way, as there is very low demand for wagons in our market.
